Roulette basics — European vs American

Direct answer: The green zero (or 0+00 on American wheels) creates the house edge. Betting systems change stake size, not the odds of each spin.

European vs American

European (single-zero) wheels use pockets 0–36 (37 pockets). American wheels add 00 (38 pockets). More house pockets mean a higher house edge on the same style of bet. French tables may offer special even-money rules (la partage / en prison) that improve the player side slightly — only when the table lists them.

Inside and outside bets

Outside bets cover larger groups — red/black, odd/even, high/low (1–18 / 19–36), dozens, and columns. They pay less per hit and lose when the ball lands on zero (unless a special rule applies).

Inside bets target specific numbers or small clusters (straight-up, split, street, corner, six-line). Higher pay-outs, lower hit rate. The zero still sets the structural edge on standard pay-outs.

What not to expect

Spins are independent. A run of red does not make black “due”. Betting systems that double after losses do not change the odds; they can hit the table maximum or exhaust a bankroll after a short streak. Live roulette uses a physical (or studio) wheel under the operator’s rules; RNG roulette uses software — check which product you opened.

Expected loss examples (outside bets)

Long-run average cost ≈ stake × spins × house edge. One session can be far better or worse — this is not a forecast.

PlanEuropean (~2.7%)American (~5.26%)
€1 × 100 spins≈ €2.70 expected loss≈ €5.26 expected loss
€1 × 500 spins≈ €13.50 expected loss≈ €26.30 expected loss
€5 × 200 spins≈ €27 expected loss≈ €52.60 expected loss

Same stake and spin count roughly doubles the long-run cost on American versus European even-money bets — the extra 00 pocket is the difference.

Suggested path: finish the tool → Match me a casino → one Play click → confirm live rules and RTP in the operator lobby before you deposit. This page has no signup boost or prize wheel.

Prefer partners that list live or RNG tables for your country — then confirm the wheel type (single vs double zero) in the lobby.

Frequently asked questions

What is the house edge in European roulette?
Direct answer: On a single-zero (European) wheel, even-money outside bets such as red/black typically carry a house edge of about 2.7% because of the one green zero. Exact pay-outs are on the table help — confirm live.
Why is American roulette worse for players?
Direct answer: American wheels add a double zero (00). That extra pocket increases the house edge on standard bets (often cited around 5.26% for even-money bets). Prefer single-zero wheels when you have the choice.
Do betting systems beat roulette?
Direct answer: No. Progression systems (Martingale and similar) change bet size, not the probability of each spin. They can hit table limits or drain a bankroll faster after a losing streak.
