Baccarat house edge — Banker vs Player
Direct answer: On standard commission baccarat, Banker typically sits near a 1.06% house edge, Player near 1.24%, and Tie near 14.4% at 8:1. Banker is the thinner main bet — Tie is expensive. Not a system to beat the casino.

How a hand works
Online and live baccarat you meet most often is Punto Banco: you bet Banker, Player, or Tie. Cards are dealt to two hands; totals use baccarat values (ace = 1, 2–9 face value, 10 and face cards = 0). The hand closer to 9 wins. Third-card draw rules are fixed — you do not choose hits like in blackjack.
A natural 8 or 9 on the first two cards usually ends the hand immediately. Exact draw charts live on the table help; the house edge figures below assume standard multi-deck commission rules.
Banker, Player, and commission
On standard tables, Banker wins slightly more often than Player, so casinos charge a commission (commonly 5%) on Banker wins. After that commission, Banker’s house edge is still a little lower than Player’s.
No-commission (commission-free) tables change the pay-out on some Banker results instead of taking 5% every time. That can raise the Banker edge versus classic commission play — read the paytable before you assume “no commission” is better.
| Bet | Typical pay-out | Approx. house edge |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 minus ~5% commission on wins | ≈ 1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | ≈ 1.24% |
| Tie | Often 8:1 | ≈ 14.4% |

What not to expect
Hands are independent under a shuffled shoe. Streaks do not make the other side “due”. Pattern charts and progressive systems change stake size, not the probabilities built into the deal rules.
Side bets (pairs, dragon bonuses, and similar) usually carry much higher house edges than Banker or Player. Treat them as optional entertainment, not a smarter main bet.
Table games often contribute little toward bonus wagering. Use the wagering calculator before you plan to clear an offer on baccarat.
Expected loss examples
Long-run average cost ≈ stake × hands × house edge. One session can be far better or worse — this is not a forecast.
| Plan | Banker (~1.06%) | Player (~1.24%) | Tie (~14.4%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| €1 × 100 hands | ≈ €1.06 | ≈ €1.24 | ≈ €14.40 |
| €1 × 500 hands | ≈ €5.30 | ≈ €6.20 | ≈ €72 |
| €5 × 200 hands | ≈ €10.60 | ≈ €12.40 | ≈ €144 |
Same stake and hand count make Tie roughly 10×+ more expensive in long-run expected cost than Banker or Player under these figures.

Frequently asked questions
- What is baccarat house edge?
- Direct answer: The long-run percentage the casino keeps on each main bet under published pay-outs. On standard commission baccarat (Punto Banco), Banker is typically near 1.06%, Player near 1.24%, and Tie near 14.4% when Tie pays 8:1.
- Is Banker better than Player in baccarat?
- Direct answer: On standard rules with a 5% commission on Banker wins, Banker has a slightly lower house edge than Player (~1.06% vs ~1.24%). That is still a house edge — not a guaranteed profit. Confirm commission and pay-outs on the table help.
- Why is the Tie bet so bad?
- Direct answer: Tie hits less often than Banker or Player, and the usual 8:1 pay-out still leaves a very high house edge (around 14.4%). Prefer Banker or Player for entertainment play; skip Tie unless you accept a much worse long-run cost.
- Do I need baccarat strategy like blackjack?
- Direct answer: No. In standard baccarat the draw rules are fixed — you only choose which side to bet. There is no hit/stand chart. Card-counting systems do not turn baccarat into a positive-expectation game for ordinary online play.
- Should I use baccarat to clear a bonus?
- Direct answer: Usually not. Many welcomes weight baccarat and other tables at a low percentage (or zero) toward wagering. Check the operator terms and our wagering calculator first.
